Hazardous waste is waste that has been classified as hazardous under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) of 1976, as amended, or the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). Hazardous waste may be of two types, listed or characteristic waste. Waste is considered hazardous if it appears on one of four lists published in the Code of Federal Regulations (40 CFR Part 261). Currently, more than 400 wastes are listed. If the waste does not appear on one of the hazardous waste lists, it still might be considered hazardous if it demonstrates one or more of the four characteristics of being ignitable, corrosive, reactive, or toxic.
